An age 23-year-old blind boxer named Thomas Seres is all set for debut his fight against a fully sighted opponent, find out more details below
Thomas will be taking up the brave challenge to take part in a charity bout scheduled for next month.
The upcoming fight is being conducted in order to raise a decent amount of money for Cancer Research UK.
Losing is not an option
Thomas is currently registered as blind and he can only see three feet in front of him. He suffers from a severe case congenital glaucoma a rare eye disease, and he has to walk using a cane. Despite this, Thomas is giving it his all in preparations for this fight, stating that ‘losing is not an option’.
He recently told The Sun:
I’ve always wanted to box but didn’t think I could until I joined a boxing gym. I’ll give it my best in the fight — win, lose or draw.”
“Boxing’s quite an up-close sport so that’s in my favour, but I’ll struggle seeing some of the punches coming in.”
A level two boxing certificate
Thomas, who currently lives in Barnsley, managed to obtain a level two boxing certificate despite problems with his vision. Moreover, the debut fighter is looking forward to have a good fight, rather than just a friendly knockabout.
Ahead of the fight, Thomas stated:
I hope he doesn’t go easy on me for being blind. He’ll pay if he does. I have a knockout punch.”
Thomas is currently in full swing with his training. Thomas does usually does some weightlifting in the gym for a couple of days in a week. He also does some training with his boxing skills three times per week.
A lifetime of operations
Throughout his lifetime, Thomas has undergone over 60 operations ever since he got diagnosed with congenital glaucoma. Congenital Glaucoma is a rare disease, which affects the eyes and vision.
According to his mother Kelly Seres, Thomas started undergoing operations at a very young age. She shared how they knew there was something wrong with Thomas during his birth. Thomas apparently had his first operation at just two weeks old and has since undergone more than 60 operations and he has a little vision.
The 23-year-old started going to The Combat Academy located in Barugh Green for some few months and he has always wished to take part in an event. His mom shared how they lost his grandad to stomach cancer about three or four years ago. Thomas had a very close relationship with his grandfather.
Kelly stated:
We had to wait for approval but we found out this week that he’d be able to fight – I’m so proud of him. He’s just hoping to raise as much money as possible.”
