Pokémon GO

’s Legendary and Mega Raids in February 2023 have been announced by developer Niantic and will bring back many older Pokémon rather than introduce new ones; however, a few surprises are in store for players. Legendary Raids are 5-star activities that feature Legendary Pokémon. These are often high-end activities that require a large group of Trainers to complete adequately. Of course, some are easier than others, depending on the opponent’s typing and CP (Combat Power), but groups of at least three or four players are usually necessary.

While Mega Raids tend to be a bit easier, this month has a couple of Mega Raids that feature Legendary Mega Evolutions, which can prove quite challenging. However, unlike the Pokémon GO Legendary and Mega Raids in January, players will have more options with the raids in February. In addition, two versions of the same Pokémon GO Tour: Hoenn event happen during the month, and they will introduce new versions of older creatures.

Legendary & Mega Raids In February 2023 Week 1

The Legendary and Mega Raids in the first week of February are already available. In the 5-star raids, Trainers will encounter Registeel, which knows the Charged Attack Zap Cannon once it is captured. While this Pokémon was introduced many years ago, it is a new opportunity for Shiny hunting. Though it is far from one of the strongest opponents featured in Legendary Raids, Registeel’s pure Steel-type grants it a sturdy build. As such, players looking to beat it should consider using the best counters for Registeel in Pokémon GO. These include Reshiram, Moltres, Darmanitan, and Lucario.

The featured Mega Evolution in the first week of Pokémon GO’s Legendary and Mega Raids in February is Mega Gengar. The powerful Ghost- and Poison-type Pokémon can be countered with Dark-type and Ground-type moves, though it is recommended to avoid bringing Psychic- and Ghost-types into the raid since they can be hit by Mega Gengar’s super-effective moves. Both Registeel and Mega Gengar have a chance of being Shiny and will be available in-game until February 8.

Legendary & Mega Raids In February 2023 Week 2

Tapu Lele and Mega Gardevoir with Pokemon GO's map blurred-out in the background.

Between February 8 and February 15, the Legendary and Mega Raids in Pokémon GO change. The featured Pokémon during the period are Tapu Lele and Mega Gardevoir. While Tapu Lele has been introduced to the mobile game previously, this time, its Shiny version makes its debut. Like all other Legendaries, such as Shiny Tapu Koko in Pokémon GO, there will be a 1 in 20 chance of finding a Shiny Tapu Lele. To face it, players should take Pokémon with Steel-, Ghost-, and Poison-type moves as they are super-effective.

Because of its same Psychic- and Fairy-type build, Mega Gardevoir should also be faced by Pokémon with the mentioned move types. Metagross, Dialga, Muk, and Drifblim, for instance, are effective counters to Legendary and Mega Raids in Week 2 of February. As mentioned before, Tapu Lele makes its Shiny debut, but Mega Gardevoir has a chance of being a Shiny. While this is a fairly ordinary Raid week, the third week of February starts seeing things differently.

Legendary & Mega Raids In February 2023 Week 3

Regirock and Mega Pidgeot with Pokemon GO's map blurred-out in the background.

The Legendary and Mega Raids during the third week of February are Regirock and Mega Pidgeot. While facing Regirock in Pokémon GO is an old activity, players can grab its Shiny version if they haven’t captured one so far. When it comes to Mega Pidgeot, this is an opportunity for players to gather Mega Energy in case they previously missed it. Facing Regirock is relatively easy because of its many weaknesses. Players need only to use strong Water-, Grass-, Steel-, or Ground-type Pokémon to subdue it
, though a large party of at least four or five is still recommended. Any Regirock captured during February 15, and February 22 will be able to have the Charged Attack Earthquake.

Because of its typing, challenging Mega Pidgeot in Pokémon GO is also easy. Strong Electric-, Ice-, and Rock-types will take it down, but a party of four or more is also recommended due to its high CP. Nonetheless, the main attraction in Legendary and Mega Raids during Week 3 of February is the introduction of Primal Raids through Pokémon GO Tour: Hoenn – Las Vegas. The in-person event at Las Vegas’ Sunset Park will happen between February 18 and February 19 and will introduce players to Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre. These are alternative versions of the Legendaries that can be obtained by gathering enough Primal Energy – in this sense; they are similar to Mega Evolutions in Pokémon GO.

Capturing Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre during this period is an exclusive feat for those who purchased the tickets for Pokémon GO Tour: Hoenn – Las Vegas and attended the event. Players who have not bought the ticket and are not on-site will not be able to partake in Primal Raids and will have to content themselves with other Legendary and Mega Raids available during the period.

Legendary & Mega Raids In February 2023 Week 4

Rayquaza, Mega Latios, and Deoxys featured in the image with Pokemon GO's map blurred-out in the background.

February’s fourth and final week has the most Legendary and Mega Raids. Between February 22 and March 1, players can take on Rayquaza in Legendary Raids and both Mega Latios & Mega Latias in Mega Raids. The Dragon-type Pokémon belongs to Pokémon GO’s Primal Rumblings event. None of these Pokémon are debuting and are, once again, an opportunity for players to be Shiny hunting or gathering Mega Energy. All three Pokémon have a chance of being Shiny, and any Rayquaza captured during the period will be able to have the Charged Attack Breaking Swipe. To face all of these Legendary and Mega Raids, the recommendation is to use strong Pokémon with Ice-type and Fairy-type moves.

However, the main attraction during the fourth week of February is the Pokémon GO Tour: Hoenn – Global event. This is a worldwide version of the same event featured in Las Vegas. During February 25 and 26, Legendary Raids will feature all four forms of Deoxys in Pokémon GO. According to Pokémon GO’s post on Twitter, these will not substitute the Rayquaza Legendary Raids. Nonetheless, the Mega Latios and Mega Latias raids will be replaced by Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre raids. This will be a chance for all players to face them and gather Primal Energy to Primal Reverse them. Through Legendary and Mega Raids, Deoxys, Groudon, and Kyogre all have a chance of being Shiny.

After Pokémon GO Tour: Hoenn – Global is over, Mega Latios and Mega Latias raids will return to the game. The Legendary and Mega Raidsp during February are much more varied than during January. Though they do not present any new Pokémon, this is a great month to find Shinies in Pokémon GO and get the new Primal forms of Groudon and Kyogre.
