Who is Kyle Thousand? Kyle Jason Thousand is the head of the baseball division at Roc Nation Sports, in addition to being a successful sports agent.
Early Years in the Life of Kyle Thousand
Thousand spent his childhood in Sioux City, Iowa, where he graduated from Sioux City North High School and went on to earn a degree in Finance from the University of Iowa. Thousand is currently working in the financial industry.
When the baseball program at Iowa State University was eliminated as a result of Title IX, he transferred to the University of Iowa with the intention of playing both football and baseball for the Hawkeyes. However, he ultimately decided to concentrate his athletic efforts on playing baseball and is now the starting centre fielder for Iowa.
In 2002, Thousand led the Big Ten in triples with 8, tying an Iowa school record and ranking him third in the nation. He was also the leader in the nation for the Big Ten.
During the Big Ten season, he earned a spot on the league’s Third Team All-Big Ten. In 2003, Thousand was named to the Second Team All-Big Ten after leading the team in five offensive categories, including batting average (.355/.370 in the Big Ten Conference), hits (59), doubles (17), runs (42) and stolen bases (20).
He was also honoured with being named to the All-Big Ten Second Team.

Thousand received his Juris Doctor degree from Creighton University School of Law in the year 2007. In the beginning of his career as an attorney, he worked in Chicago for Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP as an associate in the department that dealt with corporate, sports, and entertainment law.
During his time at Katten, Thousand was one of the attorneys that worked for both the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bulls.
In the year 2011, Thousand began his career in the sports agency industry when he accepted a position as an agent with Excel Sports Management, a full-service sports agency with its headquarters in New York City.
Casey Close made his first hire for Excel’s baseball division with Thousand, who joined the team. Thousand is a licensed player agent with the Major League Baseball Players Association in addition to being a member of the Illinois Bar Association.
Kyle Thousand Professional Career
During the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft, Thousand was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the twenty-sixth round. Due to a slap lesion labrum tear in his right shoulder, he was only able to play one season of minor league baseball in 2003 for the Toronto Single-A Pulaski Blue Jays.
This injury ultimately led to the premature end of his career. Following that, Thousand left the major leagues of professional baseball in 2003 to concentrate on his legal education.
In May of 2015, Roc Nation Sports poached Thousand from Excel Sports Management and appointed him as the company’s first Managing Director of Baseball.
Thousand had previously worked for Excel Sports Management. Jay-Z and Juan Perez, who has been Jay-long-time Z’s partner in business, co-founded Roc Nation Sports in the spring of 2013. Roc Nation Sports is a division of Roc Nation.

Cano is only the fifth player to ever sign a contract worth at least $200 million, and only Alex Rodriguez has ever signed a contract worth more in guaranteed salary. The deal that Roc Nation brokered made Cano the only player to ever sign a contract worth more than $200 million.
The previous record guarantee for a second baseman had been more than doubled by Cano’s deal, making it the only other 10-year contract signed in the last decade. The Yankees’ offer of $195 million was $65 million less than the contract that Cano signed for $240 million.
Roc Nation was successful in negotiating the largest contract ever for a player of Cuban descent, which was for Castillo and the Boston Red Sox in August of 2014.
The contract was worth $72.5 million. It was also a record for any player competing at the amateur level and any player competing in the international free agent category.
Thousand was responsible for negotiating a three-year, $75 million contract for Yoenis Cespedes with the New York Mets. The deal included an opt-out clause following the conclusion of the first season (2016).
The agreement’s average annual worth of $25 million tied the record for the most ever established for an outfielder’s average yearly value. Cespedes had an opt-out clause in his contract that would have paid him $27.5 million, which would have been the second-highest average annual value ever paid to a position player.
The only reason Cespedes was able to re-sign with the Mets was because Thousand worked with the Mets in September 2015 to amend his existing contract and allow the Mets equal footing in free agency. This made it possible for Cespedes to re-sign with the Mets.
Cespedes exercised his right to opt out of his contract following the conclusion of the 2016 season. In November of that same year, he re-signed with the Mets for $110 million spread out over four years, breaking records for annual average value ($27.5 million) records for an outfielder and any Mets player in the history of the franchise, as well as the second-highest AAV ever for a position player who is not a pitcher. In total, it ensured Cespedes a total of $137.6 million in salary from the Mets over the course of five years.
