Essex residents have been left shocked after news emerged that a former boss of an Essex branch of the Dreamboys male strip club was jailed for trying to hack his estranged wife to death.
James Brown, from Harlow in Essex, pleaded guilty to attempting to kill Emma Crossman. The 53-year-old was sentenced to 16 years in jail after a hearing at Basildon Crown Court this week.
The court heard that Brown had been separated from Crossman since 2019, but still badgered and intimidated her. On 3rd January this year, Brown went to her house in Harlow, Essex armed with an axe. He attacked Crossman and inflicted at least seven blows with the axe, only stopping when passers-by ran over to help.
Judge David Owen-Jones said: “This was a terrifying attack by somebody who had become completely obsessed by his victim,” adding that Brown had “persistently pursued” Crossman with wrongful behaviour.
Scotland Yard said that Brown had stalked his estranged wife for over a year prior to the attack on 3rd January. They also said that he had a history of domestic abuse and had subjected Crossman to a sustained campaign of harassment, psychological and emotional abuse.
Detective Constable Laura Compton, of the Met’s Homicide and Major Crime Command, said the “horrifying attack was preventable” and said the “lived experience of domestic violence has a heavy toll on the victims and those close to them.”
This case again highlights the need for greater awareness of domestic violence and for people to seek help as soon as they can if they are affected by it. Domestic violence charities remain open and accessible to those in need of support.
Between November 2020 and February 2021, officers from the Met’s Domestic Abuse Taskforce (DATF) arrested 2,959 suspects and provided safeguarding and support to over 6,000 victims.
Brown, of Jannine Close in Harlow, Essex, was convicted of attempted murder and was jailed for 16 years. He was also disqualified from driving for 18 months and was given an indefinite restrainingorder.
This shocking case of domestic violence in Essex has left many people fearful and a reminder that nowhere is safe from domestic abuse. It is hoped that this conviction will help to protect others from similar attacks and will encourage those at risk to seek help.
