Ed Sheeran has broken his own record for the biggest capacity gig in his career, just one night after having broken it previously, with both his shows at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The 32-year-old singer welcomed 110,000 fans to be serenaded in Melbourne, beating his previous record of 108,000 audience members just one night before, making it the biggest crowd he has performed to in his entire career, as well as the biggest ticketed event the MCG has put on.

Nine’s Entertainment Editor Richard Wilkinson was present at the Thursday night concert, sharing his perspective on the experience on Today.

”I have seen a few concerts over the years, but this was amazing,” Wilkins said. “There were 105,000 people there last night [Thursday] and he will break that record again with 108,000 expected tonight [Friday].”

As it turns out, Sheeran exceeded expectations, with more fans attending than expected.

Wilkins also shared that Sheeran paid tribute to his late friend, prominent Australian music promoter Michael Gudinski, on the second anniversary of his death.

“He played Visiting Hours and did the Hunters and Collectors song Throw Your Arms Around Me and the whole crowd was singing,” Wilkins said.

“It was magic and Ed had what he described as the best night of his life.”

Sheeran also took the opportunity to pay tribute to his and Gudinski’s mutual friend, late Aussie cricket legend Shane Warne, on the one-year anniversary of his death.
