Cate Blanchettwho is hotly tipped to take home this year’s Oscar for her performance in Warehousenow appears to be one step closer after receiving a coveted BAFTA nomination.
Nominees for the 76th British Academy Film Awards were announced in London on Thursday, with a number of Aussies scoring nods including Blanchett in the Leading Actress category and Catherine Martinwho scooped three nominations.
Martin and husband Baz Luhrmann‘s movie Elvis scored a total of nine nominations, including Best Film and Martin’s nods in the Production Design and Costume Design categories.

However, Luhrmann missed out on a nomination for Best Director (as did Golden Globe winner Steven Spielberg).
Recent Golden Globe winner Austin Butler was recognised in the Leading Actor race for his work on the biopic.

He goes up against Critics Choice winner Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Golden Globe winner Colin Farrell (The Banshees Of Inisherin), Daryl Mccormack (Good Luck To You, Leo Grande), Paul Mescal (After sun) and Bill Nighy (Living).
In the Leading Actress category, Blanchett will go up against Viola Davis (The Woman King), Emma Thompson (Good Luck To You, Leo Grande), Ana De Armas (Blonde), Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once) and Danielle Deadwyler (Till).

While Warehouse scored a total of five nods, that wasn’t Blanchett’s only nominated movie – with Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio also scoring a nomination for best Animated Film.
Margot Robbie’s epic love letter to Hollywood, Babylonscored a total of three nominations, however the actress missed out on an individual nod.
Similarly, there are two nominations for Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical but Aussie composer Tim Minchin wasn’t recognised.
Leading the nominations is Netflix German war epic All Quiet on the Western Frontwhich scored a total of 14 nods, equaling Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2001) as the non-English language film with the most nominations in BAFTA’s history.

The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once both scored 10 nominations each.
Regardless of the outcome on the night, the winners are clear – first-time nominees.
In the performance categories, 14 of the 24 nominees are up for their first BAFTA film award, including: De Arma, Butler, Farrell, Fraser, Mescal, Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) and Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All At Once).
Similarly, four of the six people in the Best Director category are first time Director nominees. This includes: Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King); Todd Field (Warehouse), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All At Once) and Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front).
This year’s BAFTA Awards are being hosted by actor Richard E. Grant and will take place for the first time at Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, February 19 (Monday February 20 AEDT).
